Anita Saarkessian
Anita Sarkeesian is a Canadian-American feminist media critic and public speechwriter. She founded Feminist Frequency which is a website which features video and posts on the representations of women in popular media. Anita Sarkeesian is an award-winning feminist journalist from Canada and a blogger. She is the author as well as the executive director for Feminist Frequency, a not-for-profit educational website which explores the portrayals of women's roles in popular stories of culture. Committed to deconstructing the stereotypes associated with women in popular culture, she works to raise issues related to the targeted harassment of women and the other minorities of people in the online environment. Sarkeesian graduated with a master's degree in social and political thinking from York University. As a public speaker, she's popular as she has appeared at TEDxWomen XOXO and United Nations Broadband Working Group. She has been interested in gender issues and feminism since an early age. As of 2009, as she was still enrolled at university, Sarkeesian launched the website Feminist Frequency. She was launching a series of online videos that examined the gender representations in video games at the time she came under the sway of online harassment. The incident did not deter her, however it did strengthen her commitment to be a feminist critic of media. Her numerous contributions to the field of feminist are recognized with numerous awards. Anita Sarkeesian has been a journalist for a long time and was the creator of Feminist Frequency, an educational non-profit that explores gender representation in popular culture.
